Knowing about the bounce rate is going to be beneficial for anybody involved on the website, including web designers, developers, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), PPC, email marketing, copywriting, and conversion rate optimization.

What is the bounce Rate?

What is the bounce rate? 

Here is a simple example. Let two users are visiting your website/blog.

The first user comes along to your site, after visiting they didn't like it. Or any reason the website didn't load. That is why they left straight away.

Now, the next user visits a page of your website. After that, they have a look at another page. That means have stuck on your website. Still visiting after visiting the first page. That means have not bounced from your site.

So, from these two users we have seen, one user bounced, and one stuck. This meaning that you have got a bounce rate of 50%.

What is the normal bounce rate? 

From different case studies, it is said that,
  1. Over 50% is probably a bit high
  2. Anything under 50% is okay
  3. Under 40% you are doing well
But different page types have different bounce rates.
 
For example, on a blog page, people might find it via social media. So, they will click on a Twitter link, come to that page, they will not be interested in any of your other blog pages necessarily at that moment in time.

They only want to read that specific page. So, those pages are likely to have a much higher bounce rate than another page of normal content.

Now, the next example is a product page on an e-commerce site. If somebody does an organic search for it, fins, and then clicks the link from the result, then they see a product.

OK, it might not be the right product. But then they might want to compare to other products. So, they will click on other pages. So, you will get a lower bounce rate on product pages of an e-commerce site that blogs pages.

What else you can do with the statistics of the bounce rate?

 It is beneficial to compare it to the usual average time on that site. After analyzing if you found that, the user who bounces has spent five minutes on the site before leaving, then the bounce rate of your website is very good.

On the other hand, if a user has come to your page. After just two seconds, they have left the page and moved to another page, you know that reality is, even though you have got a low bounces rate, with the average time on the page being very low, it may not be the specific page.

So, you could adjust your PPC campaign. You could promote a different page organically. You can take a different link for your email marketing campaign process after knowing what is your bounce rate, and what the average time on page is.

How can you improve your bounce rate? 

There are several things that have to follow. For example, with a product page, it would be good to have a list of related products, so that somebody can easily see what other products are available, and which other pages they should go to.

You can also use a breadcrumb. Breadcrumb easily shows the category in which that product was. Because of that anyone can just go up a level in the site and see all the available options.

You have published a blog post. If you want visitors to read other pages of your site, then it is a good idea to add related blog post links, categories. Also, a link to the writer's Twitter profile can be added.

Those sorts of things mean that actually, your website visitors will interact a bit more. Obviously, if they click on a Twitter link, that would take them off the site, and because of that, the bounce rate would still be higher. But actually, they are going somewhere beneficial. So sometimes it is good.

And obviously, your content must have to search relevant.

Website Speed is also an important factor. If your website is taking a long time to load then it will increase the bounce rate, because people want to visit a website quickly.
